ACT:LIVE MUSIC is proud to present…
Werd Play ‘Coconuts’ Live @ The Dub Land Underground, recorded December 12, 2009 in Rochester, NY.
A little back story and info on the album…
This past December, we brought Homeboy Sandman, The Brown Bag All Stars, P So and Brokn Englsh up to The Dub Land Underground for a show with locals Reece Q and Gillateen…
While always in the pursuit of bringing new talent together and making hip-hop magic, I had the idea of getting these guys together for a freestyle session, to be released as a full length album, and here it is. I truly believe that the art of freestyle is an essential element in hip-hop, so, for all you freestyle junkies, dig in, because this is the real deal.
ACT:LIVE MUSIC has been recording a little thing called ‘Werd Play‘ at The Dub land Underground since last September that has been a huge hit locally with MCs and producers alike. ‘Coconuts‘, is an extension and expansion on the project..a special edition if you will. The idea is to feature up and coming MCs and producers, and to get their music out there. There is a sea of talent on the East Coast right now and I consider the gentlemen on this album to be some of the leaders in this hip-hop renaissance of today.
Guys like Homeboy Sandman, The Brown Bag All Stars, Reece Q, P So, Brokn Englsh, The Goonies Crew, amongst others, are paving the way for the future in hip-hop. This album, is completely representative of that notion.
It was an honor to put this together and work with everyone of these artists on the project…big ups to you guys.
Where did I come up with the name, ‘Coconuts‘? Well, keeping in mind that this was a special edition, I wanted it to have it’s own identity apart from previous Werd Play editions, Homeboy Sandman provided that inspiration.
Homeboy Sandman, god bless him, had some very specific eating requirements for his hospitality rider, and I was glad to oblige. The list of foods included all organic and raw foods..strawberries, apples, bananas, avocados, oranges and…coconuts, among other items. The coconut shells were all over the bar, and I have never seen anything like that at our bar, so, I found it amusing watching him hack them open with the back of the chef’s knife, though I know he prefers a machete.
I had debated titling the album ‘Taco Dinner’, which was what the rest of us ate from the catering, but I think ‘Coconuts‘ is a fun name and it’s also my personal tribute to Homeboy Sandman, a monster MC and one hell of a model American. Cheers, Sandman.
The beats on this mix are fire, the MCs kill it and on a side note, the bonus track on the album with Hassan Mackey and Thievin’ Stephen, is a beat that Homeboy Sandman got on called ‘ROYGBIV‘ that will be featured on DJ Tim Tones‘ latest mix tape, ‘Genesee Life‘, coming out on ACT:LIVE MUSIC very soon.
Hassan Mackey, by the way, MURDERS mics. Not to take anything away from any of the other MCs, because I know they all agree, but to quote J57…”Hassan is a MONSTER.”
I would like to sincerely thank Alex Ng of Don’t Beat Records & Elektrobank (90.5FM WBER, Rochester, NY) for doing an amazing job of recording, mixing and mastering this live album, Mike Hanlon for the video, Josh Currier at NeonThoughts for the website to even make this possible, Drew Nye for supporting me through everything and The Dub Land Underground, my second home and passion. Oh yeah, and Moe’s Tex Mex for some dope ass tacos…Holla!
A very special thanks to DeeJay Element and E Holla of The Brown Bag All Stars for driving 6 hours and standing behind the wheels of steel for another two hours when I know you guys wanted to rest. Thank you, sincerely.
I don’t know what else to say, except, enjoy.
One more note…
Homeboy Sandman’s first round did not make the cut because of technical difficulties, but you can catch the video from that freestyle on our video blog page. You can also catch a good handful of the freestyles you hear on the album in videos on our video blog page.

Is this track listing just a rundown of artist names? Be nice to make some sense of what songs I’m listening to, you know?
The songs don’t have official titles. They are all beats that have been previously unreleased. There is one or two that may appear on other albums by said producer, but only one or two.
Because it is a “freestyle/open format” format, again, there are no track titles.
Make sense?
